Tim Ferriss' new bestselling book on health and fitness the 4-hour body topped the New York bestsellers list quickly after its launch. Currently with two books in the top seller's list (the 4 hour work week is still at #10), he has established himself as a successful author.
The 4 Hour Body is an excellent read, with lots of valuable information. Lots of people are clearly buying the book (the bestsellers list are based on sales volume), however that doesn't always mean that lots of books are getting read. The fate of many large books is not to get read. It can be quite intimidating to see a large book on your bedside, and it's easy to put off starting to read it for another day.
This is the way some people feel about the 4-Hour Body. Unfortunate, because it is really worth the read. I personally finished it within two days and enjoyed every minute of it. But I am not the average busy man.
So for the average busy man, which bits should you read? Which bits can you leave out?
Here is the top pick to read.
- Chapter 3: Subtracting Fat: If you don't know what insulin sensitivity is and why it is responsible for you being overweight amongst other health issues, you've missed out on something big that often gets lost in all the stories in the media. Thankfully Tim has spelt it out clearly to the world here. Nothing new, but he is giving it the publicity it needs. Now you have no excuse not to know! Read it, or fail your basic self-health exams.
- Chapter 7: Reversing Injuries: This is huge. Injuries during exercise and sports are very common. The number of people actually getting negative benefits from their exercise and fitness regimes is unfortunately very big because of injuries. The bit to watch for is the part about 'protecting yourself from injuries'. There are specific routines you can do to make sure you are protected, and Tim has done a great service to the world by putting them in his book.
Here are my top picks to skip.
- How to Sleep Less and Feel Great: I know a lot of people including myself who have tried these techniques out over the last 10 years. They are relatively well known in different circles, but extremely unpractical. These aren't relevant to 99.9% of people, so you're missing out on them isn't going to hurt.
- The 15-min Female Orgasm: There is a lot of much better and more advanced techniques out there that are more effective, quicker and more enjoyable for women than this particular technique. Give it a miss and look for the better stuff if you are inclined.
